Help Needed!

Conceptional chalk drawing - Help needed
Conceptional chalk drawing – Help needed

Hello all! We are seeking a single female to assist us as a live-in volunteer for our shelter. The individual we’re seeking would undergo a background check, interview(s), and training. We are needing assistance with overnight shifts, from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. The position would require 5 overnight shifts each week, including Saturday and/or Sunday. In exchange, we offer a private room with a locking door, kitchen access, bathroom access, and laundry facility on property.

The overnight shift is quite simple, basically making sure all residents have returned to the shelter, and being available if a resident needs something over night.

If you are interested, please call the shelter at 360-479-9020 and ask for Bethany, our assistant director.

Thank you so much!
If you know someone who would be interested, please pass this along!

You’re Invited! Open House, May 3rd

5Years

We would like to cordially invite you to Georgia’s House “Open House” on Tuesday, May 3rd from 10:00 am- 4:00 pm. (Drop in when you’d like, of course!).

We would like to you see the impact your support has had on hundreds of women and children as well as the larger impact on our community. We’ll have light food and drinks. We would love to show you our new flooring, not to mention our remodeled kitchen. The ladies have loved it and it has made our place much better.

Our real impact has been on the ladies and children that have come through our shelter. We provided 5,682 bed nights in 2015 alone!. We should be able to provide even more in 2016.

The open house is celebrating our 5th anniversary! It also coincides with The Kitsap Great Give.
The Kitsap Great Give is a 24-hour, online giving event organized by the Kitsap Community Foundation and Presenting Partner, the United Way of Kitsap County, for the benefit of the greater Kitsap area.

On May 3, 2016, from 12:00 am to 11:59 p.m. Anyone can go to our Kitsap Great Give page and donate to Georgia’s House. All donations made during the Kitsap Great Give will be proportionally matched by a local bonus pool. That means your donation will go even further!

Funding from this event will help to keep the lights on and water flowing. It will allow us to be an active participant in the war against homelessness and poverty.

*All donations are tax-deductible in their full amount (prior to any fees).*

Our thanks to…Ashley Furniture

One of things about being homeless is that the hurdles to overcome don’t end with getting housing. Getting an apartment is great! But many of our residents leave and move into their new apartments with little more than clothes and a few personal items.

The local Ashley Furniture store has stepped up to help the children leaving our shelter. They have been giving them twin beds! For free. You can imagine that we have had some VERY happy kids (not to mention their mothers!).

The employees also personally pooled their money and gave us a $200 shopping spree in the store. And they keep a collection box for Georgia’s House on their front counter.
So we wanted to dedicate this post and say “Thank You!” to Ashley Furniture.

Our thanks to…USS Albuquerque

Georgia’s House recently underwent a drastic re-model (in days!) and feels more like a home than ever. Without the sailors of the USS Albuquerque, it would have been impossible. New flooring. New paint. And among the improvements is the kitchen sink is in…the kitchen. (Before it was in a back hallway). It is amazing.

There were multiple people and groups who helped out, and you’ll be hearing about them in the next few days.

Go Navy!
Go Navy!

I want to start with the USS Albequerque. They have done multiple outside “clean-up” projects for us. The property is large and grass needs cut, little maintenance items come up, items need to go to the dump, a shed needed torn down, etc. They also held a canned food drive for us.

But the sailors went above and beyond anything we expected with helping with the remodel. The sailors came out- on their day off!- to do an AMAZING amount of work. They literally got approximately 3 days of work done in 5 hours. They disassembled 15 heavy, very sturdy, wooden bunkbeds and lugged them out into storage. They lugged everything in the shelter (if it was on the floor, it had to go) out to storage. They ripped up carpet and flooring. They painted. They did a million little things that go along with remodeling.

It would have been impossible to complete this so quickly- thus keeping the women and children in our shelter with a roof over their head- without their help. Every future individual who stays there will benefit from the improvements.
The Navy community in the area has helped so much over the years. Commands, FRG’s, individuals, volunteers (approximately half of the volunteers are Navy-related in some way).

Thank you, USS Albuquerque! Your sailors are amazing and the positive impact they had on us, thus the community, is immeasurable.

New Partnership with Housing Solutions Center

Yay! We’re happy to announce that we are working with HSC again! New clients will be referred through them. HSC works with every shelter in the Kitsap area and allows for getting everyone a bed quickly and ensures people go to a proper setting.
Of course, we still take emergency intake on weekends. Part of our mission is that no one is turned from our door without some sort of help.
If you’re a person looking for a bed, please call Housing Solutions Center at (360) 473-2035. If no answer (if late night or on a weekend), try the Crisis Center at (360) 479-3033 or dial 2-1-1.

Thank You! & School Supplies Needed

thank-you-489376_1280
First of all, before anything else, I want to thank everyone who has donated items. We’ve received an outpouring of clothes. And when our washer AND dryer broke two months ago, we had offers for free ones (yes, multiple) in a matter of hours! You are all amazing, and we appreciate it.

Right now- with school getting ready to start- and our 9 school-age children, we would really appreciate school supplies.
Needed:
3-ring binders
Wide-rule notebook paper
#2 pencils
Washable markers
Crayons
Colored pencils
Pink erasers
Pocket folders
Plastic pencil boxes
Kleenex
Hand sanitizer
Zip lock bags

Non-school related, we are in desperate need of toilet paper and twin-size sheets.

Stay tuned for future blog posts. We’ll be featured brief biographies (anonymously) of some of our residents- past & future. Their stories are amazing.
Thanks,
Everyone at Georgia’s House
